Party Tonight with Aloo tikki chat :)

Yet another bandh, (this time a Karnataka bandh) yet another day of house arrest. Not that I did not go out, ignoring all the good advice from my aunt. Had been around Malleswaram for a walk. Bangalore hasn’t been like this in a while, heaven!! Empty roads, no vehicles, enjoyed seeing the kids play galli cricket..haven't seen this in ages! This was how the bandh had been for me, another field day in the kitchen. After a quick stock-check, decided to make aloo tikki chat, minor variations for ingredients that weren’t at home.

Ingredients

Chole

250 gms Chole (soaked for 6-8 hours)
3 – 4 medium sized Onions
4 Medium sized tomatoes
½ spoon jeera powder
1 spoon of coriander powder
1 spoon red chili powder
1 inch ginger
1 tsp chole masala powder
½ tsp turmeric powder
Pinch of hing
Salt to taste

Aloo Patties

500 gm potatoes
½ tsp jeera powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
¼ cup coriander leaves, finely chopped
½ cup bread crumbs
2 nos. green chilies, finely chopped
Salt to taste
½ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp red chili powder

Chutneys

Mint Chutney

1 bunch mint leaves
½ bunch coriander leaves
2-3 nos green chilies
½ tsp jeera powder
Salt to taste
2 tbsp Bengal gram

Sweet chutney

1 lemon sized ball of tamarind
4 dates, de-seeded
2 tsp sugar
Salt, a pinch
½ tsp red chili powder
½ tsp jeera

Garnishing

Onion, finely chopped
Coriander leaves, finely chopped
Chat masala

Method

Chole

Finely chop the onions & tomatoes.
Pressure-cook the chole, about 4 whistles should do.
Heat oil in a kadhai, sauté the onions until they are slightly brown in colour
Add grated ginger, tomatoes. Cook for a minute.
Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, jeera powder, red chili powder & salt. Cook until it comes to the consistency of a fine paste.
Add the cooked chole & chole masala. Boil for 15-20 mins.
Garnish with coriander leaves.

Patties

Boil the potatoes. Mash well.
Add all ingredients, except for the bread crumbs, & mix well.
Make small balls of these, press until they are roughly of 2 inch width & ½ inch thick patty.
Coat it with bread crumbs (I used rava today as there was no bread at home).
Shallow fry the patties till both sides turn golden brown in colour.

Mint Chutney

Grind all the ingredients with little water.

Sweet Chutney

Microwave the tamarind & dates in ½ cup water.
Once cooled, grind it along with the rest of the ingredients of the chutney.

Serving

Place the patty in a bowl
Add chole, a spoon of the mint & sweet chutney.
Garnish with onions & coriander leaves.
Top it with a pinch of chat masala.

Enjoy the chat. Though the post looks really long, you'll love making & eating the chat.
Happy cooking until the next post :)

Hi Jyothi,

Sorry for the very late reply. About your inquiry on strawberry plant- they don't grow tall. they stay same size but eventually start flowering and produce fruits.
